Biography

Tax

Currently, I work at McMahon & Tivnan, PC. At McMahon & Tivnan, PC I represent individuals, estates and businesses in tax controversies with the IRS and state departments of revenue.

Before joining McMahon & Tivnan, PC, I worked for PwC. At PwC I provided consulting and compliance services to private equity funds, insurance and real estate companies. In particular, I advised clients on cross-border reorganizations, and reporting requirements. I also assisted clients with treaty interpretations and withholding taxes.

Before joining PwC, I worked at the Harvard Law School Federal Tax Clinic. At Harvard I was in charge of the intake process. I also worked on collection, tax court and innocent spouse cases. I also prepared and reviewed tax returns and trained students to prepare tax returns. I consulted residents and nonresidents on the preparation of their tax returns as volunteer at the IRS VITA program.

Law

I graduated from University of Iowa College of Law. with an LL.M. During that time I worked as a research assistant for two Professors in projects where I could use my international background and knowledge of Russian and German languages. You can read more on my Research page.

After my LLM program, I worked as a law clerk for two law offices in Iowa City and got insights into different areas of law. I worked on workers’ compensation cases at the first firm, where I was doing research, writing legal briefs and selecting exhibits for the trial. At the other law firm I was contributing to a class action lawsuit by researching and reviewing and analyzing documents.

In Belarus I graduated from law school of Belarusian State University. In Belarus I worked as a lawyer for the state organization for equestrian sports and for the Association for Human Rights Defense International (HRD). At the former I worked with real estate leases. At HRD I consulted and represented clients before the administrative court and the court of appeals.

Human Rights

Beyond my experience in law, I have an interest in politics and Human Rights. I graduated with an MA in Human Rights from the University of Manchester on an OSI/Chevening scholarship. In the Czech Republic I did a one-year research internship at La Strada about the role of unofficial employment agencies in exploitation, forced labor and human trafficking of Russian speaking female migrant workers, again funded by the OSI.

In between I worked, interned and volunteered for various organizations, such as Amnesty International Czech Republic, the OSCE, and two NGOs in Manchester concerned with women’s rights.

Education

While I was working at Harvard, I audited a few classes on international tax law, corporate, partnership tax law, federal tax clinical seminar, as well as a tax law reading group.

I have attended The University of Iowa College of Law, The University of Manchester, U.K. and the Belarusian State University.
